Dragon Stop Motion and Mac OS X 10.5.6

Postby DZED Systems on Fri Dec 26, 2008 3:46 pm

NOTICE: Mac OS X 10.5.7 is now available.
If you are on OS X 10.5.6, use Software Update in System Preferences to download the update.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VERY IMPORTANT : USING MAC OS X 10.5.5 and 10.5.6
If you are running Mac OS X 10.4.11, you can disregard this notice.

If you are running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and you plan to shoot with a Canon or Nikon DSLR that uses a live view mode, this letter is for you.

You need run Dragon from OS X 10.5.5 until the 10.5.7 update is available.

Apple introduced a bug in their OS X 10.5.6 update that creates a memory leak when any software connects to Live view from a still camera. The memory leak causes slowness and crashing. This does not effect video cameras or video output from a DSLR, just live view through the USB.

Apple's bug effects software like Nikon Capture Control, Canon EOS Utility and Dragon Stop Motion.

Apple is aware of this issue and we look forward to a fix in next OS X update 10.5.7.

The good news is that Dragon still works perfectly on OS 10.5.5
If you are running 10.5.6, here are three options:

1) Perform an "Archive and Install" of OS X 10.5, then upgrade to 10.5.5. Apple has instructions on their site here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710. Make sure to read the instructions before proceeding.

2) If you have an external hard drive, you could install a fresh OS 10.5 on that and boot from it to run Dragon. (Note that if you are on a non-Intel mac, you can only boot from Firewire drives. On Intel macs you can use USB as well). You do not need to purchase another OS X license. You can get an external drive for under $100.

3) You can install OS X on a separate partition. See the instructions in the post that follows.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Installing OS X 10.5 on a Separate Partition

Postby DZED Systems on Tue Feb 10, 2009 7:42 am

One solution for the OS X 10.5.6 problem is to create a separate partition on your hard drive and install OS X 10.5 on it. You can run Dragon from this partition.

We strongly recommend that you use Time Machine to backup your system before you create a new partition.

Step 1 : Open Disk Utility (in Applications : Utilities)

Step 2 : Select your hard drive (on the left)

Step 3 : Select the "Partition" tab

Step 4 : Select your main partition underneath "Volume Scheme"

Step 5 : Press the "+" button to add a partition

Step 6 : Select the new partition, and set the size. Press "Apply" to create the partition.
I set mine to 20GB. You could give it more space, but it doesn't need that much.

Step 8 : Install OS X 10.5 on the new partition.
Make sure to install it on the new partition, and not overwrite your main partition.
